Coda

LUNA LOVEGOOD goes back to Hogwarts for her last year, and to all appearances seems to be doing quite well--good marks, no raging nightmares waking up the one roommate she has left. But she is quiet and subdued. Ginny leaves part way through the year, which makes her even lonelier. Her quasi-lycanthropy is an open secret--the bite is right there, on her face, after all--but there isn't as much fuss as Luna feared there would be. For one thing, it's known she doesn't transform. And for the other, with the loss among the conservative purebloods of so many of their friends and members of their families, as well as the admission to Hogwarts of Muggleborns and older students, the snobbish and intolerant have too much else to think about.

Luna's father never recovers enough to do more than occasionally recognise her for about five seconds, and then he fades out again, and he dies a little over three years from the end of the war. The loss of the last of her immediate family ties her yet more tightly to the Weasleys as an adopted daughter in just about every respect, although she doesn't change her name. She, like Ginny, lives at the Burrow at first after leaving school. She parlays her NEWT 'O's in Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures into a job with a naturalist consortium that makes money by discovering new species of fauna and flora which might be offer as either specimens for wizarding gardens or new, powerful potion or charm spell ingredients. She willingly socialises with her Hogwarts cohort, including those in the Order and the grown Moddey contingent, in a rather quiet way, and she has much to do with Terry growing closer with their friends once Terry finally admits the truth that has been obvious to Luna for years and they become a couple.

Once she and Terry marry and have their two daughters (Rowan and Betony), Luna tapers back first to consulting work that she can do at home, and then to writing and illustrating incredibly fanciful children's books. Many of the delicately sketched quill-and-ink fantastical plants and beasts that appear in her engrossing stories first made their appearances in the margins of the letters that Luna sent to Terry in the years that he was wandering. The books enjoy a modest success, and although Terry and Luna are never exactly wealthy, they are content with what they have.

When they go to Hogwarts, Rowan is eventually sorted into Ravenclaw, and Betony into Hufflepuff. Molly, Alice and Frank hugely enjoy being joint grandparents of their children.

[On the names: Rowan is named for the Rowan tree, which yields prized wand wood due to its reputation for protection, and was noted by Garrick Ollivander to generally produce powerful, hard to break Defensive Charms. Rowan was also noted for its believed disassociation with the Dark Arts. Ollivander, who had a nearly photographic memory when it came to the wands he had sold, could not recall a single instance of a wizard he sold a rowan wand to ever becoming evil or turning to the Dark Arts. Perhaps for these reasons, rowan has become associated with pure-hearted wizards, though Ollivander noted that rowan wands can also match or even outperform others in duels.

Betany is regarded as the most important medicinal herb to the Anglo-Saxons of early medieval Great Britain. Betony has healing properties, and is used in wizarding remedies: dried betony leaves are used in the treatment of mad dog bites.]

Private message to Terry Boot, Colin Creevey and Ginny Weasley

Terry and Colin,

I talked with Ginny at the funeral.

Terry, I know you promised me every full moon, and Colin, you've always been happy to wait for me outside the room. But they are going to need every wand that we have for Penzance tonight. Ginny's agreed that I can stay with her tonight, and we've worked it out with the Enforcers that I can stay with her at the safe house.

It's all right--this is what I want, honestly. I can't fight tonight. But I can let you go where you are most needed, and that way I can feel as though I'm doing something for the Order. I've been through this before, so I know I'll be just fine, and Ginny will be the company I need.

This kitten is a descendent of one of the kittens from Headmistress Umbridge's kitten plates.

Kitten knitting sketch.jpg

It's playing with a ball of yarn because many of us have been setting up charms to make stockings and jumpers (Mum your Mum Mrs Weasley has been teaching the charm to as many people as she can), and so a lot of the girls have knitting needles hovering in the air, clicking away just behind them while they're busy doing something else.

Charlie wrote to you, I see. I assume he told you his family news?

Adam is just as adorable as ever. And even more admired now, of course.

I wish

I wish you would

Order Only: Private message to Colin Creevey and Kingsley Shacklebolt

You know I've been drawing sketches for Ginny in the private messages I've been sending to her. I was hoping...I don't know. If I just drew a picture of someone she cared about, or she used to care about, but without saying anything about them, without arguing with her about what she thinks they've done, it would allow her to think about them, but maybe without all the lies she's been made to tell herself about them.

But she hasn't said a word about any of them. Not one. Not even about Adam.

I suppose there's no point in being hurt about it or anything--after all, I don't even know if they're letting her have her journal anymore, so perhaps she hasn't even seen them. And if she has--I imagine they want us to give up on her, or to be hurt by what she does--or doesn't--say to us.

So I won't give up on her. Not yet. (And at least I'm getting some sketching practise in.)

Daddy still doesn't recognise me most of the time.

Can you come find me? I think I would like some alone time with you, perhaps out on the big rock overlooking the lake. If you're willing?

It's been a rather sad day.

Private message to Ginny Weasley

This was an experiment in trying to draw a portrait in snatched glances, over a period of several days, and then trying to put my memory of those glances together into the picture. Hermione is so busy these days, that I certainly couldn't have her sit for me.

I suppose that's why it's blurry. I had to fudge the details because I was drawing from memory, rather than because she was sitting right there in front of me.

This was Daddy this morning, dozing in bed in the Hospital Wing.

Xeno bedside.jpg

I've changed the face of the Healer sitting with him. He's a very kind and competent Healer, and Daddy likes him quite well (when he's awake and aware, which is happening a little more often), although he keeps confusing him with your father someone else who isn't living anymore.

I'm less happy with this one of Sally-Anne than the one I did of Adam. I think her lips look a little too big. What do you think?

(I can just hear you giggling that they're probably so big because Ron's been kissing them so much.)

Private message to Ginny Weasley

This one turned out rather well, I think!

Adam sketch 2.jpg

Adam's changed a bit even in just the little while since you've been away. He can sit up on his own for a whole thirty seconds now! Unfortunately, this often gets him quite excited which makes him start waving his hands--and then over he goes. Bonk! Tonks has learned to cast a cushioning charm in a circle around him on the floor, which means there are less tears.

He was smiling at me ever so much as I drew this. I told him I was drawing it for you, and he giggled and blew bubbles, so I think he was pleased to hear it.

He's looking more like you around the eyes every day.

Love,
Luna

Private message to Professor Vector

All the Ravenclaws who are still here were so very pleased and touched to see you at the service today. We have all been quite worried about you, and it was a relief to see you resume your place among the staff for the first time.

As for today's announcement--I hardly know what to say to you, because (if you don't think me impertinent) we all know that the Board of Governors' decision must be perfectly daunting to you, given what has happened here at Hogwarts over the past fortnight. The past year.

But if you are willing to do it, I do think Hogwarts would be very fortunate to have you assume the role of Headmistress. I have had friends in the other Houses--especially Gryffindor and Slytherin--say how fortunate we Ravenclaws have been to have the same Head of House for all the years we have been at Hogwarts, someone who truly does have our best interests at heart.

I don't know...well, none of us really know what will happen at Hogwarts next year. I don't even know if I'll be permitted to return. I think we will all be more hopeful, though, if we know that you will be leading us, given how well you have served as Ravenclaw's Head of House.

Thank you. I hope you continue to gain in strength, and that your healing goes well.

Sincerely,
Luna Lovegood

Thank you for the card, Linus. It was very kind of you to think of it. The charm was quite clever, and the dancing baby bowtruckles you sketched on the front made me laugh. It hurt a bit to la

I believe that Madam Pomfrey healed Lavender's foot and ankle the first night, didn't she? I haven't seen her since she was released from the Hospital Wing. Madam Pomfrey said she came in once when I was asleep, though (they gave me lots of potions the first day).

I'm so glad that those half-werewolf things didn't reach her. But it was really Mr Shacklebolt who saved us both.

I understand that you were quite heroic and saved a number of the younger students, too. I'm grateful on behalf of our House, and I'm sure their families are, too. Still, there were so many. I will miss my dorm mate Celia.

Cedric Diggory stopped by briefly to say hello, when he was getting the death list taking a message, and he said you were staying over to assist Professor Sinistra with some Arithmancy calculations to help protect the castle. So thank you for that, too.

Madam Pomfrey has said she will be releasing me from the Hospital Wing tomorrow, so perhaps I'll see you then.

Order Only: Private message to Mrs Longbottom, Mr Lupin and Madam Pomfrey

I know you must have a simply enormous list of things to do, and I don't wish to add to your burdens. Just...could you please add this to the list?

Could you see if it's possible to liberate the people in the Vale of Health? Or to see if St Mungo's can see to them?

I'm sorry to trouble you, as I'm sure it's a lower priority, but if you would be so kind as to note it down and remember it until later, I would be very grateful.

I just really want to see my Dad. Even if he can't

Is there any way that I can assist while I'm in bed? I can write letters or take notes, or help any way you wish.
